Referral
A 13.5 yr MN DSH was referred for radiation therapy for an oral melanoma.
Patient History
JoJo Was seen at his family vet on 14/2/25 for a rapidly growing mass over the rostral right maxilla resulting in malodour. On physical exam a pigmented mass was noted in the gingiva around 102-104 region. Jojo was referred for further workup and a CT scan was done showing the mass was confined to the gingival tissues with minimal bone erosion. A mildly enlarged right sided mandibular node was also detected. Cytology of the mass
was done confirming a diagnosis of melanoma. Jojo was otherwise well but did have a history of feline idiopathic cystitis linked to stress.
Diagnostics and Treatment
On 24/2/25 Jojo presented to ONE cancer care for pets for stereotactic radiation therapy of the primary mass and an enlarged right retropharyngeal node detected on the CT simulation scan.
Outcome
Minimal acute adverse effects were noted and were limited to some hair loss over the upper lip and mild mucositis which resolved with supportive antibiotic and anti-inflammatory prescriptions. The mass started to recede visibly within weeks of the treatment and Jojo has achieved a full clinical remission which is durable now 7 months following completion of the treatment. Mild leukotrichia is noted in the radiation field as shown in the image to the right.
Stereotactic radiation therapy (SRT) 3 day course of treatment to the ventrum
SRT was prescribed to the primary and regional lymph node as a non surgical alternative.
25.5Gy in 3 fractions to the Target volume
VMAT fields are used to provide excellent treatment, preserving healthy tissue and critical surrounding structures.
Daily cone beam CT was used to verify the accuracy and precision of treatment
15 minute treatment time including daily image guided radiation therapy (IGRT)
