Sydney’s newest veterinary cancer care centre is now open, offering pet owners access to advanced radiation therapy once reserved for human medicine.
ONE Cancer Care for Pets – Concord is one of the first dedicated veterinary cancer centres in Australia and is home to the country’s most experienced veterinary radiation oncology team. The new facility brings together expertise, innovation, and compassion to provide pets with world-class cancer treatment in a purpose-built environment.
Precision Treatment with Leading Technology
At the heart of the Concord centre is a next-generation linear accelerator with stereotactic capabilities – a machine designed to deliver highly targeted radiation therapy with exceptional precision.
“This technology allows us to treat tumours that were once considered inoperable,” says Dr David Lurie, Radiation Oncologist at ONE Cancer Care. “The precision we can achieve lets us target tumours closely while sparing nearby organs, something that simply wasn’t possible in the past..”
Fewer treatments, lower cost, and fewer side effects are now possible – all while maintaining, or even improving, patient outcomes.
A National Network of Excellence
As part of the Oncology Network for Excellence (ONE), the new Concord location benefits from a truly collaborative model. This network of leading veterinary oncologists works together and alongside the broader veterinary and human health communities to advance cancer care for pets.
“ONE represents a new way of working,” says Dr Lurie. “It’s about harnessing collective expertise – not just among radiation oncologists, but also surgical and medical oncologists, referring vets, and researchers. Together, we can achieve better outcomes and contribute meaningfully to the future of cancer care.”
The centre also plays an active role in education and research, contributing to scientific publications and helping to train the next generation of veterinary specialists.
Looking Ahead: PET-CT Coming Soon
In the coming months, the Concord team will introduce PET-CT imaging – one of the most advanced diagnostic tools available in both human and veterinary medicine.
Unlike traditional imaging, PET-CT goes beyond anatomy to reveal how metabolically active a tumour is, giving clinicians a deeper understanding of how best to treat it.
“This will be one of the first times PET-CT is used routinely in veterinary care in Australia,” Dr Lurie explains. “It will allow us to further tailor treatment to each individual pet, enhancing both quality of life and clinical outcomes.”
